within...without - installation

135 greene street gallery new york, ny 2005

The installation within-without is a reflection of homelessness. Our intent is to have the viewer or visitor make a connection by entering into a place where the body is without or does without. A mental visit into unattainable desire as well as an ever constraining spatial condition where one is funneled into a place that allows no progress. To go forward one must go backward. To escape the ever tightening spiral one must physically and mentally choose the opposite path. Within...without is a piece where the fields of inside space overlap with the layers of the exterior space. The only pure expression of in-ness or interior space is inaccessible to the visitors. In essence, the visitor is always on the outside looking in, a condition homeless people experience on a daily basis.
